I Just Surfed On! I am searching for childrens stories, namely, "Zub the Tooth Fairy," by Anne T. DeWitt and Agnes T. Schulte. As I was scrolling through Magellen Search, Just Surfed On appeared! If anyone out there knows about this story, PLEASE CONTACT ME. Agnes is deceased and Anne is now 80 - we are having a surprise party for her soon. She would really like to see something about her book on the internet that she wrote with her sister Agnes, and it's pretty cute. The story was patented and the book was copyrighted about 20 or 30 years ago. Thanks!

I was curious about the comments you made about "the
other" Japan. Regarding the pizzas, yes the baby corn was
a bit of a shock, but the biggest shock was the size, or lack
of to be more exact. We were expected to share one pizza
between 6 but the size of the pizza was smaller than a Pizza
Hut Personal Pan Pizza!! After spending the day out sailing
on the Sea of Japan, we needed more than a whisper of
pizza.

If you ever get back to Japan, get off Honshu! Visit Shikoku
and see the most traditional area. There were still villages
around the island where I was the first gaijin (foreigner) seen
in person. One day, while cycling with a friend, we stopped
at a small shrine and were greeted by the village children.
As we cooled down and prepared to climb a steep hill to the
temple above us, we noticed that the children had returned,
complete with gifts in the form of snacks and school equip-
ment! They then came up the hill and introduced us to the
temple.

Just one of many experiences in the wonderful world of
the Rising Sun!!

(P.S.: It is not just the young women who don't know how to
dress in kimonos. A middle aged woman told me her class,
she was a student, not a teacher, was almost all older
women! She said that traditionally the women always
had help dressing and with the change in economy, they
no longer live with mothers or have servants to assist them.)

I spent two years climbing and skiing in the Himalayas.
I've been to Varanasi, Rajastan (Did you miss the lake palace
of Udaipur?) Bombay, Delhi, etc. I climbed in Nepal. Its
really cool to meet someone who has done all this and a
whole lot more. I'm going to Florence this summer, and I
plan to do the cliche backpack thing around France and
Italy.
I'm a freshman at SUNY Stony Brook. Thats on Long Island
Its close to NYC, and since I grew up in Maryland I'm still
discovering more about it.
Anyway, I hope you have some more adventures planned

This is real cool! I was born in Japan and it is interesting
to see so much about it!

I am doing a report on the womans and childrens roles in
Japan unfortunatly I didn't find a whole lot plus the fact
it would have been helpful if you had the ways of woman and
children before WW2.

Great to see glimpses of my city again, where I haven't been in 3 years.
Yes, I am from Varanasi. But, one of the pictures - you say its the old
palace which dominates the skyline, infact its the Aalamgir Mosque which used
to be the site of original hindu Vishwanath temple, it was destroyed by invading armies
and a mosque was built on the ruins of the temple.

I live in Setagaya. I'm a married (to a Japanese woman) w/m 34yr american. I have had most of those experiences here myself. Just yesterday they had an "all you can eat " lunch at Shakey's in which there were NO normal pizza's. They were all "sea food" or "farmers delight" types, along with sphagetti and french fries. I started to write a journal similar to your home page. Have you noticed that there are only 3 types of building faces? Cinder block/brick, stucco, bathroom tile. everywhere you go looks like an industrial park. Anyway, I've been here for 5 years now and I don't have any plans to "go back" I've been importing American made clothing for wholesale to retail shops. I like it here and all it's little weirdnesses (like no one says "excuse me" on the train when they have to push you in order to get out) so I guess I'm a little on "the edge" now. Meaning I've become so used to it myself that it doesn't strike me as odd anymore. I think you write very well. Those comments you wrote convey a lot of meaning in a few words.
