Italy

Venice - II

[I4] Venetian Gondola

To be honest, I did not see many gondolas in Venice. There were many tied up to docks, but few seemed to be ferrying passengers around. Much more common were small boats that people used as ferries to get from place to place, and not particularly romantic.

[I5] Ponte Rialto

Another famous Venetian sight. Unfortunately, now this area houses touristy souvenir stands, but the bridge itself is still inspiring.

[I6] One of the many jetties to be found where people tie up their boats along the larger canals. The Grand Canal can only be crossed in three places by bridge, so small boats are necessary to ferry people back and forth.

[I7] The towers of San Gimignano

After leaving Venice, I visited the small hill town of San Gimignano, famous for its towers. During the 13th century a feud between the town's two wealthiest families led them to build these towers. Only 14 now remain of the original 72. This is a lovely and quiet small town where you can easily imagine life in the old days.
